Avoiding Common Mistakes When Drafting In Dynasty

The biggest problem that a dynasty owner could run into would be an unsuccessful startup draft. This is where you are building the foundation to your roster. A good draft will put you in a good position to succeed in the long-term, but screwing up the draft could leave you in a deep hole that could be very difficult to come back from. To solve this problem and avoid many years of struggling, I have come up with some common mistakes that can be made by dynasty owners.
The biggest mistake that a dynasty owner could make is to go into the startup draft unprepared. Like everything else in life, preparation is key. No matter what it is, you are going to be a lot more comfortable and confident if you have taken the time to prepare. Not preparing for the draft could leave you stuck when it is your time to pick and may cause you to make picks that hurt your team for the long run. The best way to prepare is to do your research. The best tools out there to research for fantasy football are podcasts, articles, rankings, and mock drafts. Podcasts and articles are both extremely beneficial when trying to find good insight to both information about football players and tips/strategies on how to play fantasy football. I personally love podcasts. They are very easy to listen to throughout the day and provide a lot of good content while being entertaining and keeping you engaged. I have mentioned a few podcasts that I enjoy and find very helpful in one of my blog posts. My favorite podcast to listen to, although it is more focused on re-draft fantasy football, is the Fantasy Footballers. They are very intelligent on the subject and they make the podcast a lot of fun too. The Fantasy Footballers and most other podcasts and websites also publish articles. These articles are all focused on fantasy football and they provide you with strategies, player statistics, and analysis that is very beneficial. Another common tool that is very helpful for research is player rankings. You can find rankings all over the internet. Player rankings will differ from person to person, but going through many different sources and analyzing the different rankings will help you form your own. It is important to have your own rankings of fantasy football players ranked by position. This can be a nice tool for you to use while in the middle of your draft. If you have done the research and ranked the players you like, when it comes to your turn to pick, you’ll have a good idea of who you like best based on who is still available. The last step to properly preparing for your startup draft is to mock draft. Mock drafts are fake drafts that you can do with other fantasy football players that will not count after the draft is finished. These can be helpful in seeing where certain players go in drafts and will help you form your team the way you want it. This is a great time to mess around and test out different draft strategies and eventually pick the best one. The best part about these is they are free. My friends and I will go through mock drafts daily during the offseason and it is very beneficial come draft day. Using these different tools will leave you ready to go for your drafts and you’ll have fun preparing as well.
Although going into your draft unprepared is the biggest mistake dynasty owners can make to start their team, there are many other common mistakes that I see during the startup draft. One place where people can run into trouble is having too much bias for players. It is very common to want to rank players that play for your favorite NFL team higher than they really should be. For me, I need to be aware of this when considering drafting a Packers player. Even though a player on the Packers may be one of my favorites in the league, it is still important that I don’t harm the rest of my draft by choosing him over someone who may be better for fantasy football. Another common mistake I see is putting too much emphasis on bye weeks when deciding who to pick. When it comes to bye weeks in fantasy football, the truth is they really don’t matter. The way I see it is if you happen to have a lot of players on your roster with the same bye week, then you may not be at full strength for one week, but you’ll have everyone playing at the same time the rest of the games. If you have bye weeks that are spread out, then you will never have a week where you are at too much of a disadvantage, giving yourself a chance to win every week. In the end, when deciding who to pick, go with the better player regardless of his bye week and the bye weeks of the players that you have already drafted. My last common mistake that I see in drafts is the way that fantasy players construct their roster. I have always believed that it is important to draft a balanced team with good players at every position. Some owners may like to try to stack up at one position, like getting a lot of running backs but then you will be weaker at wide receiver. I like to put together more of balanced roster because you can only start so many players from each position. Being solid at every position will help you score more points more consistently, leaving you in a better position to win more games. These are all mistakes that take place during the startup draft in dynasty that I have seen happen and can really put a team behind the competition and may make it hard to bounce back from.
