Problems With Inactive Fantasy Football Owners

One of my biggest issues with fantasy football is when you have members in your league who do not pay attention or care about their team. Whether it is because they drafted a bad team and basically gave up on the season or they lose interest, it can harm the rest of the league. When you sign up to play fantasy football, especially in dynasty formats, you are making a commitment to the other league members to actively participate. We have all had those leagues that end up falling apart because a member gives up and then more start to follow because the league gets less interesting. Having a team inactive during the season will shake everything up because some teams may get lucky and play that team when multiple players are on bye weeks and then it pretty much turns into a free win. If a member isn’t paying attention, it’s basically like you don’t get the full experience. Maybe you want to trade for someone from that team, but they aren’t interested or willing to talk about trades so those players are basically locked all season. This will especially screw up dynasty leagues because if you have an owner who gives up, the team most likely will not improve, which makes it much harder to find another member willing to take over a dynasty team that is not very good. Then that new member has to trying to dig the team out of the hole it was left in which we all know is no easy task.

Comparing ESPN and MFL

Two of the most popular websites that provide a quality fantasy football platform for you to use for your leagues are ESPN.com and MyFantasyLeague.com. I have mentioned both of these in previous posts as good websites to use when trying to create a fantasy football league. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages that ESPN provides is easy usability. The first league that I ever created was when I was 12 years old on ESPN’s website. It is very easy to do on your own and they walk you through the step by step process to make sure you set your league up just the way you want it. ESPN provides you with all different types of helpful tools also. The biggest advantage of ESPN is the FantasyCast tool. FantasyCast is something that you launch on game day and it conveniently provides you with updated play-by-play from every game that is going on and also the box scores of the teams in your fantasy league. It is so nice because you can stay updated with both every NFL game and your own fantasy matchup all on the same page. The biggest disadvantage of ESPN is that it is strictly re-draft leagues. There is no option to play dynasty fantasy football. That is what is so great about MyFantasyLeague.com. MFL focuses specifically on dynasty. There are a lot more settings that you need to choose from to personalize your league correctly for dynasty and MFL does a great job of laying it all out clearly. MFL allows each member to edit the layout of they’re pages too so you can design the site the way you want. The big disadvantage of MFL compared to ESPN is that they do not have mock drafts and their FantasyCast is not nearly as good as ESPN’s.

Why You Shouldn't Overreact to the NFL Combine

One critique that I would like to give to the fantasy football community as a whole would be over analyzing the NFL combine for incoming rookie players. The NFL combine was last week and it is crazy to me how much people react to the NFL combine and the results of some of the athletes. In my opinion, it is a lot more important to go back and look at actual game film and watch these players play in a live football game. The combine only measures player’s athletic abilities, but there is so much more than being an athlete that goes into being a successful NFL player. One player may be able to jump higher than another, but that’s not going to help him transition to the NFL better than having good football IQ and instinct. There have been plenty of players in the past that have had great combines and then struggled in the NFL. There have also been players that didn’t do as well in the combine and their draft stock lowered, but ended up having great careers in the NFL. So, in my opinion, it is much more important to focus on a player’s success at the college level and the team that they get drafted to. Landing spot in the NFL draft outweighs the results at the NFL combine because the team that a player goes to will affect their opportunity to get on the field enough or they may go to a bad team and just not be surrounded by enough talent to help them succeed.
